Backend development for the DAK app

Designing secure, efficient, and future-oriented digital health services.

Client

DAK-Gesundheit is not only one of the five largest statutory health insurance companies in Germany — it is also a company steeped in tradition. DAK-Gesundheit is a self-governing public corporation. It is subject to the principle of solidarity and has 5.5 million insured members and around 300 offices nationwide.

Challenge

DAK Gesundheit already offers its members many digital services via its app and website, such as submitting documents, filing applications, secure communication, barrier-free use, collecting bonus points, and contacting the company via chat and telephone.

The goal is to continuously expand this offering in order to remain attractive, especially to digitally savvy customers. Growing user numbers and digital topics place high demands on security, stable systems, and well-designed processes. A key challenge is to design internal processes efficiently (e.g., through dark processing) while simultaneously developing new digital offerings for insured persons — both of which must be balanced.

Objective

The focus is on the further development of digital health services – for example, new e-prescriptions such as DIGA, eAU, or Digitalpost. The e-prescription for medical aids is also being redeveloped in the “eGesundheit Deutschland” project.

This includes improving the digital mailbox for insured persons, introducing digital registrations in selective contracts, and connecting existing systems such as 21c|ng via BitGo and GeCo.

The technical implementation comprises modern backend development, the use of Spring Boot microservices (Java 17), and the development of new REST interfaces according to the API-first principle with OpenAPI 3. Security is a high priority – based on the OWASP Top 10 standards.

The goal is to make digital processes in healthcare secure, user-friendly, and future-proof.

Solution and benefits

The optimization of backend systems ensures smooth processes and compliance with technical requirements. Innovative e-health solutions strengthen competitiveness and increase attractiveness for insured persons.

The legally compliant implementation of new digital offerings creates trust and improves service. A modern digital mailbox enables secure and efficient communication of sensitive health data.

Simplified digital processes — such as when registering for selective contracts — reduce administrative effort. A high level of protection safeguards against data misuse. Carefully developed microservices and interfaces ensure reliability, quality, and customer satisfaction.

Client: DAK

Project name: Backend development for the DAK app

Challenge

With the DAK app and website, DAK Gesundheit already offers its members many exciting and useful ways to manage their health insurance needs digitally.

  • Simply scan and submit documents (e.g., invoices)
  • Request certificates and submit applications
  • Securely access messages from DAK-Gesundheit
  • Use the app barrier-free (e.g., through a high-contrast appearance)
  • Collect bonus points and apply for subsidies
  • Contact DAK-Gesundheit via chat, telephone, and contact form, or find the nearest service center

The goal is to further expand these offerings for insured persons in order to remain and become even more attractive on the market, especially for customers interested in digital services.

With the increasing number of e-topics and users, security, stable and error-free software, scalable systems, and cleanly designed processes play a particularly important role here.

Care must always be taken to strike a balance between improving internal processes (e.g., with dark processing) and new topics for end customers.

Project

  • Support in the area of backend development
  • Technical design and consulting in the area of e-topics
  • Further development of e-topics, in particular further e-prescriptions (e.g., DIGA), eAU, and digital mail
  • New development of e-prescription tools as part of the eGesundheit Deutschland project
  • Further development of the digital mailbox for DAK-Gesundheit policyholders
  • Implementation of digital registrations in selective contracts
  • Connection of the 21c|ng inventory system via BitGo and GeCo
  • Security-compliant development taking into account OWASP Top 10 & OWASP Mobile Top 10
  • Design, implementation, deployment, and testing of new Spring Boot microservices in Java 17
  • Creation and coordination of new REST interfaces with API first approach, implementation, and documentation with OpenApi 3

Benefits for customers

  • Optimized operations: Revamping back-end systems ensures smooth processes and compliance with performance requirements.
  • Future-oriented decisions: Innovative solutions for e-health issues strengthen competitiveness and increase appeal for insured persons.
  • Legal compliance: Compliance with regulatory requirements and implementation of new e-issues create trust and improve service.
  • Secure and efficient communication: Advanced digital mailbox increases the efficiency and confidentiality of health data.
  • Digital processes: Simplified registration in selective contracts and reliable workflows reduce administrative effort for all parties involved.
  • Secure environment: Ensuring a high level of protection against accidental and malicious data breaches.
  • Reliability and quality: Careful design, implementation, and provision of microservices and REST interfaces ensure satisfied customers.
