Backend connection to Catena-X

msg enables the BMW Group to exchange ECU data in a standardized manner

Challenges with Catena-X

Catena-X has evolved into more than just an industry initiative—it represents the new benchmark for staying integrated within the automotive value chain. Gradually, the data transfer throughout the supply chain is being integrated into the Catena-X data ecosystem.

For many, particularly medium-sized enterprises, this necessitates that their own IT systems must be adapted to be Catena-X-compatible swiftly and securely. But which enablement services are appropriate? Which business applications are worthwhile? And most importantly, what implications does this have for my backend IT?

msg assists organizations on this journey—from strategic planning to the modification of internal processes—ensuring that Catena-X not only functions technically but also delivers genuine added value.

From standard to solution—our methodology

With years of project experience and an active involvement in the Catena-X association, we are the perfect partner for practical implementation. Alongside technical setup and onboarding assistance, we prioritize integration into existing IT landscapes.

We seamlessly link Catena-X setups with backend systems to facilitate the availability of existing data for exchange or to purposefully incorporate incoming data. Only when Catena-X is fully integrated into existing business processes and systems can its complete efficiency potential be unlocked—eliminating the need for manual workarounds or extra effort.

To achieve this, we evaluate existing systems, data flows, and processes. This often leads to further optimization strategies tailored to the specific use case.

The outcome: standardized, end-to-end data transfer and enhanced process efficiency simultaneously.

Backend connection at BMW Group

Our collaboration with the BMW Group illustrates how this operates in real-world scenarios: Together, we have established the technical foundation for transitioning the data exchange of electronic control units (ECUs) with suppliers to Catena-X.

To achieve this, the standardized Catena-X aspect models were synchronized with the current data models and tailored for the specific use case. Aspect models convey technical information in a consistent format, serving as a fundamental element of interoperability.

We developed an asynchronous interface for the data transfer between the Eclipse Data Space Connector (EDC) and the BMW backend. Additionally, a feedback channel was created to furnish suppliers with comprehensive details regarding successful or unsuccessful transfers – a significant enhancement in terms of transparency and process quality.

Conclusion – More than just a technical project

The integration of Catena-X solutions transcends the mere implementation of a new standard – it presents a chance to revamp existing processes, boost efficiency, and enhance data exchange throughout the entire supply chain sustainably. The crucial element here is the seamless connection to the existing backend IT, enabling Catena-X to realize its full potential – free from media disruptions, manual postprocessing, or isolated solutions.
